Case Study: MSOS

Helping to grow a company is a passion of the Summit team. The sense of achievement in overcoming the many challenges that occur, and seeing a company develop and your customers become successful is immense. MSOS or Medical Support Off-Shore is no exception.

Established in 2007 by Dr. Spike Briggs and Dr Mark Tomson, MSOS was set up to provide telephone based Medical Support to some of the world's biggest tans-ocean yachts races (including the Volvo Ocian race and the Global Ocean Race), and also private boats venturing to some of the most isolated seas.  Seriously experienced both at sea and in hospital, Spike and Tommo were in a unique position to develop MSOS into what it is becoming today: namely one of the most specialist and advanced providers of Medical Kits, Medical Training and Medical Support for sailors on the high seas.

The challenge:
The founders of MSOS wanted to step up a gear and to move the training and medical kits side of the business from something which was done over the phone and at the weekend, to a business with its own office premises, staff and marketing activity. As well as find premises, recruit good people and persuade the right people to support them in this quest, they also needed help with marketing and company support systems. In 2011, Spike called in Summit to assist.

The methodology:
The Summit team met with all the people involved in the MSOS business. We sat down and obtained a thorough understanding of the objectives, budgets, priorities and timescales within which we had to work. The MSOS team required an accounting system, a stock control system, a website with CMS, and a CRM system, and they needed all systems to be accessible from home offices, the new office premises, and from remote locations including overseas.

The solution:
Summit helped MSOS put in place a number of different, relatively low ongoing cost cloud based systems. The key to success of the overall structure is comprehensive integration between all components, and full remots accessibility.  The systems that we chose to implement were:

In addition Summit designer's provided MSOS with a new self-managed website which based on a very user friendly CMS platform, enabling them to produce marketing collateral without any problems or assistance going forward. Since then, the MSOS business has continued to grow and thrive, and we look forward to the next iteration of the website development when online sales and responsive design should all play a part.

More about the Founders:

Dr Spike Briggs BSc FRCA is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia.

He originally graduated with a degree in civil engineering and worked for ten years designing foundations for oil rigs, before returning to medical school. He has sailed all his life, including racing around the world in 1996. He now advises on medical support for ocean yacht races and is an instructor for advanced life support advanced trauma life support courses.

He is an instructor and examiner on medical aspects of yachting for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. He is a founder director of Medical Support Offshore Limited.

Dr. Mark "Tommo" Tomson MBBS MRCGP is a full time GP in Hamble.

After qualifying as a Doctor he then combined sailing and medicine for a few years crewing for some of the best sailors in the world, competing in two Admirals Cups, a Transatlantic on a Whitbread Maxi in 1987 and more recently part of a European Championship winning Farr 40 and SB3 national champion crew. His medicine also took him to New Zealand for a year and then on several expeditions.

He has been designing Medical kits for the Whitbread/Volvo race for 15 years and also for notable sailors such as Peter Blake, Ellen Macarthur and yachts such as Leopard. He has also been supporting and advising crews while there are out at sea for many years.
